After Shane Mosley they consider Marquez

Talks are already rife about Pacquiao’s next fight penciled for November possibly against Mexico’s master counter-puncher, Juan Manuel Marquez, in case Floyd Mayweather finally wakes up one day realizing that it’s about time to face the Filipino sporting icon. But assuming Mayweather remains deaf and callous to the public clamor, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum has already somebody in mind to close out 2011 with a bang.

Still, even if a script is already made for the next move, an unforeseen circumstance lurks behind, something that should put everything upside. A hundred miles away from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Shane Mosley is plotting the destruction of boxing’s premier attraction when they finally come face-to-face and mano-a-mano on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Holed out in Big Bear, nestled in the San Bernardino mountains that is almost 8,000 feet above sea level, Mosley has been training since early-March as though he would be up not only against Pacquiao but against the gazillions of Pacquiao fans.

“You just have to keep going, and going and going (in training),” said Mosley from his high-altitude training camp, his voice oozing with heightened optimism.

Even Arum sounds a bit concerned of what a cagey veteran like Mosley can bring to the ring.

“Shane can take a good shot and he is so resilient,” said Arum.

Obviously, Pacquiao realized very early that despite the lackluster ending of Mosley’s last two fights, taking him for granted is tantamount to giving the other guy an advantage.

Pacquiao still huge favorite by bettors

A look at the latest odds shows that Mosley's marquee opponent, pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao, on May 7 in Las Vegas remains the huge favorite in their scheduled 12-round World Boxing Organization welterweight match-up at the MGM Grand. Sportsbook lists Pacquiao a -800 favorite and Mosley a +500 underdog, meaning an $800 bet on Pacquiao would only win $100 and a mere $100 wager on Mosley would win $500.

That, despite of Mosley’s no-nonsense preparation. Even Pacquiao's Canadian adviser Mike Koncz was surprised with the way Mosley appeared when he faced the media last Tuesday.

"Mosley looks in real great shape," said Koncz, who had obviously seen the American puncher's photos on the internet as he was working out for the media. "His body is toned and you can see that he is taking the fight very seriously," added Koncz.

Mosley actually beat Pacquiao to the punch as he reported for training camp some 10 days before the Filipino actually went up to Baguio City with Freddie Roach. At 39 years old, Mosley believes he still has a lot of championship juice left and that the world will be in for a shock come fight night. Mosley said he prefers to win big – as in by knockout – against Pacquiao.

But Pacquiao is also eyeing the same kind of ending as nobody has yet stop Mosley dead in his tracks. Although Mosley has suffered a few losses, he has never been stopped in his stellar career. Manny Pacquiao vs Shane Mosley is promoted by Top Rank in association with MP Promotions,Sugar Shane Mosley Promotions, Tecate and MGM Grand.

Manny Pacquiao Will Start his Sparring Sessions Today

Pacquiao vs MosleyTrainer Freddie Roach said he’s looking forward to the first day of Manny Pacquiao’s sparring with Shawn Porter and David Rodela on Tuesday afternoon. The Pacquiao vs Mosley fight will happen on May 7, 2011 on MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Roach and Pacquiao were scheduled to train Saturday afternoon at the Elorde Sports Center in Sucat, ParaƱaque, but the pound-for-pound king didn’t make it to workout. Team Pacquiao left its high-altitude training camp in the Pines City so Pacquiao can grace the annual Elorde Boxing Awards. Pacquiao and Roach were still at the event around midnight of Friday since they were requested by the Elorde family to stay for a while and watch some fights.

Pacquiao and Roach are staying in Baguio until Friday as they are scheduled to leave for the US this Saturday for the most crucial phase of the training. Another batch of sparmates await Pacquiao at the Wild Card in Hollywood, according to Roach, who is also tapping prospect Omar Henry. Roach said Mosley, despite him being a crafty fighter as well, can be outboxed, as shown by what Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto did to him.

Mayweather weathered an early storm and dominated Mosley en route to a lopsided decision in May last year, while Cotto scored a unanimous but close decision win over him in November 2007. Roach said Mosley’s strength surfaces whenever he is up against a fighter who comes at him and he knows very well not to fall into that trap. While Pacquiao is the type of guy who thrives in exchanging power blows, Roach said he will tweak his fighter’s style a little bit to suit their gameplan.

Pacquiao Sparring Session to Start Early

With Manny Pacquiao getting into shape sooner than expected, his sparring sessions may also be moved forward. Unbeaten welterweight Shawn Porter and lightweight David Rodela arrived late last night from the United States to serve as Pacquiao's spar mates in his training for Shane Mosley. Pacquiao, who took advantage of the training break to shoot scenes for his television program Show Me Da Manny yesterday, is slated to have his first sparring session next week. Gauging from Pacquiao's progress, however, it isn't far-fetched that Roach will also adjust the original schedule, which calls for four weeks of training here before moving over to his Wild Card Gym in Hollywood for another four weeks.

Pacquiao Start Gym Work

Eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao already began his gym work on Saturday, more than 2 months away from his welterweight title clash against former world champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley. Although his heavy training will actually begin on March 12 in Baguio City, the Filipino superstar said he wanted to cover the basics again. The Pacquiao vs Mosley fight is scheduled on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. We’re covering the basics of training,” said Pacquiao. His Canadian adviser, Michael Koncz, said Pacquiao only wanted to make sure that his conditioning is already at an ideal level before he begins the heavy training.

“We’re not underestimating Mosley. He’s the most experienced fighter that Manny’s ever faced,” said Koncz.

Pacquiao, also hailed as the “Fighter of the Decade”, will be staking his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title when he faces Mosley in Las Vegas. Most boxing observers see the 39-year-old Mosley at a gross disadvantage against Pacquiao because of age. The Filipino champion, however, does not share this sentiment. He thinks Mosley still has enough gas left in his tank. We should not underestimate a great boxer. He’s strong and a champion. He has the advantage in experience, he said. Aside from being an amateur standout, Mosley won several world titles in three weight classes.

Pacquiao No. 1 in Ring Magazine's 100 list

Manny PacquiaoFilipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao was chosen by Ring Magazine as its top boxer among the "100 best fighters in the world" for 2010.

The 100 list, compiled by Ring Magazine's William Dettloff, included 2010 boxing achievers like Sergio Martinez, Juan Manuel Marquez, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, and Fernando Montiel.

"As most of us expected, Pacquiao made mincemeat out of Antonio Margarito, who not so long ago everyone was calling the most feared fighter in the world," Dettloff said in his blog.

Pacquiao was earlier chosen by fight fans as Ring Magazine’s “2010 Fighter of the Year”.

Ring Magazine is considered as the “bible of boxing."

"Along with everyone else we would have preferred the year ended with a superfight against the next guy on this list, but you can’t have everything," Dettloff said.

The "next guy" he's referring to is No. 2 ranked Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Pacquiao’s next fight is against former welterweight champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley, who is ranked No. 17 on the list.

"The Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire Jr. also made it into the respectable list. He is just a notch below Marquez at No. 5.

"Donaire obliterated Wladimir Sidorenko (KO 4) on December 4, his third fight of 2010 -- quite busy indeed for a top pound-for-pounder these days," said Dettloff.

The Filipino Flash is currently preparing for his February 19 bantamweight title clash against No. 7 ranked Montiel.

“Montiel probably qualifies as the best fighter Donaire has ever faced and what happens when they meet will go a long way toward determining where Donaire appears on this list next year,” said Dettloff.

Mosley says talks set for May 7 Pacquiao fight

Pacquiao vs Mosley"Sugar" Shane Mosley, a former world champion in three weight classes, told the Los Angeles Times on Monday that his advisor was to meet with Manny Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum about a May 7 fight. Hours after sending a Twitter message about a Pacquiao fight that said "the ink hasn't dried yet but it's pretty much a go", Mosley said prior discussions set the ground for finalizing a deal quickly, the newspaper reported Monday.

"We've already discussed the fight about three, four weeks ago, so now we'll go over it again," Mosley told the Times. "Both sides just need to commit to what we've talked about and then I think we're done."

Mosley said his advisor, James Prince, would "go over the particulars and maybe sign" a deal to fight Pacquaio, who turned 32 three days ago. Mosley, a 39-year-old American, is 46-6 with one draw and 39 knockouts while Filipino superstar Pacquiao is 52-3 with two draws and 38 knockouts.

"Pac-Man" has won 13 fights in a row, the southpaw having not lost in nearly six years in a span that has seen him dispatch such stars as Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Mosley, however, has lost twice and struggled to a draw in his past five fights, falling to Puerto Rico's Cotto in 2007 and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jnr last May before being drawn by American Sergio Mora last September. Mayweather has twice failed to come to terms on a fight deal with Pacquiao for the megafight showdown fans have desired and Mayweather now faces legal charges over two incidents in Las Vegas set to go to court early next year.

Mosley was the biggest other US name among Pacquiao's possible foes, but also the one with the weakest recent results on a list that included a potential third fight with Marquez and a rising US star, undefeated welterweight Andre Berto. One detail that needed to be settled by Pacquiao, according to Mosley, was an exact weight for the fight. Pacquiao could fight at welterweight near 147 pounds or perhaps risk his World Boxing Council junior-middleweight crown. Reports that Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach wanted Mosley to submit to drug tests in the wake of the American's ties to the 2003 BALCO steroid scandal did not dissuade Mosley, who said he would submit to tougher tests, as he did before fighting Mayweather, as long as Pacquiao was required to do the same.

Pacquiao vs Mosley getting closer

Pacquiao vs MosleyShane Mosley has one foot inside the ring, as Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent. Bob Arum of Top Rank said the Filipino icon will be back in action on April 16 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas or just five months after his 12-round demolition of Antonio Margarito in Dallas. Arum wants two fights for Pacquiao next year, and probably the only way to this is if the fighting congressman in Sarangani holds his next fight no later than May.

“I have to make sure with Manny and make sure he’s okay with it. It’s an ideal date, right after the Final Four and the start of the baseball season and right around the beginning of the NBA playoffs,” said Arum,

“As long as it doesn’t interfere with his duties as a congressman, I think we’ll be in good shape,” he told the Las Vegas Review Journal.

There are a couple of names being considered, and since it’s highly improbable for Floyd Mayweather to step up the plate, the choice is down to Mosley or Juan Manuel Marquez.

“It looks like it’s Mosley,” said Pacquiao’s business manager, Eric Pineda, yesterday.

“The only thing we don’t have now is the contract,” he added.

Reports said negotiations have been ongoing between Pacquiao’s representatives in the US, including his adviser Mike Koncz, and Mosley, who’s willing to seal the deal by himself. Mosley is ready to keep Golden Boy, which promoted his most recent fights, out of the deal because he must have realized that it’s the only way for him to land the fight with Pacquiao. Golden Boy and Top Rank are locked in a legal battle regarding Pacquiao’s fight earnings. A fight with Mayweather could earn Pacquiao as much as $70 million (roughly P3 billion), according to one of his advisers, Chavit Singson. But there are too many obstacles facing the superfight. Pineda said Pacquiao is not backing off from any fight, not even with Mayweather or Marquez, who’s been shouting all over that he had beaten Pacquiao twice.

“Manny wil fight anybody. We know that,” said Pineda.

“But I think it’s going to be Mosley. I just don’t know anything about the date. Manny said he wants to return to the ring in May,” Pineda added.

Pacquiao picks Mosley over Marquez

Newly-crowned World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight king Manny Pacquiao said he is willing to face former champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley. Pacquiao said a battle against Mosley may turn out to be a more interesting fight than with his other rival, Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico.

He added that the former World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion has a wider fan base compared to Marquez.

“Marquez? Siguro walang manonood... walang pay-per-view (Marquez? Nobody might watch us… no pay-per-view),” said Pacquiao.

Mosley has been chasing Pacquiao since the Filipino won over Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto in 2009. After Pacquiao’s win over Mexico’s Antonio Margarito, Mosley reached out to promoter Bob Arum to negotiate the fight despite being a shareholder of Golden Boy Promotions (GBP). GBP is the business rival of Arum’s Top Rank promotions.

Marquez, meanwhile, has already fought Pacquiao twice. The first fight was in May 2004 when the match ended in a draw despite Pacquiao scoring 3 knockdowns over Marquez. A rematch took place in March 2008 when the Filipino champion again decked the gutsy Mexican for a split decision. Both fights ended in controversial fashion.
